Abstract: In Mark’s Gospel a disciple’s fundamental vocation is his proven ability to be with the Master. Even if the ultimate objective of the calling is the sending out, its first condition is to be with Him (Mk 3,14). In this first requirement of the discipleship there is a clear need for close association, in a certain symbiosis between disciple and Master, so that the disciple may fully assimilate everything about himself to be ready for the future sending out. In this article the Author relates this first part of the vocation (Mk 3,13-15) to the disciples’response to Jesus in the Gethsemane (13,32-52). In the very moment when Jesus needs the physical, spiritual and affective presence of those He called, they sleep. In these two frames (calling – sleep) we can observe the relationship between the calling and the answer: Is being with Him compatible with sleep? Is being with Him harmonious with the flight?
