Abstract: This paper attempts to reflect on the mystique of the poverty experienced by the Poverello of Assisi, a poverty that, seven centuries later, fascinated the French philosopher. Its intention is to show how this mystique is not Francis’ or Simone’s: it is rooted in the heart of the Gospel. Therefore, we will start by briefly examining how the New Testament presents poverty as a challenge and as an invitation. Next, we will see how the encounter between Simone Weil and Francis of Assisi occurred and the impact that meeting had in her life. Then, we will see how the mystique of poverty experienced by Francis was assimilated and followed by Simone, and how this mystique became for her – as it had become for him earlier – an ideal of life, a condition for the experience of an authentic and humanizing freedom and a possibility of communion and unity with the beauty of the world and the poetic dimension of the existence. Finally, we will see how both Francis and Simone are passionately attracted by the Cross and especially by the Crucified One, where they see and perceive the culmination of human life made for a communion with the true God.
